Personal Development
We believe that developing confident, responsible and compassionate young people is an important part of life at our school. Our Personal Development programme provides children with opportunities to develop their leadership skills, build confidence, take responsibility and make a positive contribution to school life.
Throughout the year, children have a range of opportunities to take on leadership roles and get involved in activities that reflect their interests and strengths.
Our Year 6 pupils have the special responsibility of becoming House Captains, Play Leaders and forming The Chapter Crew.
Our other Crews are open to children across the whole school. Children can choose the Crews they are interested in and are welcome to join more than one. This enables pupils to explore different interests, work collaboratively with children from across the school and develop new skills.
Through these opportunities, our children learn to be confident, responsible, respectful and active members of our school community, while developing the personal skills and qualities that will support them throughout their lives.
Children who wish to stand for the role of House Captain prepare a speech and present it to the school in an assembly. Their peers then vote through a pupil election to choose their House Captains. This gives our children valuable experience of public speaking, democratic decision-making and taking responsibility for others.
Children who would like to become Play Leaders write a letter of application to the Assistant Headteacher, sharing why they would like to take on the role and how they would help to make playtimes enjoyable, inclusive and positive for everyone
The Chapter Crew is a reading leadership opportunity for children who have a genuine love of reading. They are responsible for ensuring the resources in the Library are fit for purpose. They also return books to the correct shelves and support in auditing the genres and quality of the texts in our collection. They also promote reading for pleasure by running lunchtime reading activities both indoors and outdoors. Children from across the school are invited to apply.
Our Community Crew helps children build positive relationships with people and communities beyond our school. They develop friendships with residents at our local care home, sharing conversations, stories, activities and experiences. They also look for ways to support our wider community, take part in local events and make a positive difference to those around us.
Our Unity Crew helps to create a school where everyone feels included, valued, safe and respected. They celebrate what makes each of us unique by recognising and learning about different cultures, traditions and communities throughout the year. This includes events such as Black History Month and Pride helping us to appreciate our differences, learn from one another and celebrate the diverse world around us.
Our Eco Crew helps us care for our school, local community and the planet. They raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage everyone to make positive choices, such as reducing waste, recycling, protecting nature and saving energy and water.
Our Culture Crew celebrates and promotes arts, music, drama, dance, literature and different cultures across our school. They help to bring exciting creative opportunities to pupils, support music clubs and performances, care for our instruments, raise money for music-themed trips and welcome visitors into school. Open to children across the school, the Culture Crew gives pupils the opportunity to share their creativity, develop leadership skills and inspire others.
