Music

Intent

At Westwood we are guided by the National Curriculum for Music (2014).

The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notation

The music curriculum at Westwood Primary School aims to foster a love , passion and enjoyment of music be that listening, appreciating or playing music.

Implementation

Through the teaching of Music we underpin learning with the 4 key pillars:

Our music curriculum uses Music Express as a resource to cover our Key Concepts of the music curriculum:

Structure, Notation, Performing, Composing, Beat, Pitch Exploring Sounds

As well as this, we aim to offer other musical opportunities for our children. These include:

  • Whole class ukulele lessons for Year 3
  • Individual/group guitar and ukulele lessons
  • Rock Choir
  • Opportunities for performances in the local area

Musician of the Month

Our Musician of the Month is promoted across the school. This is done so in class and in assemblies allowing children to learn some more about the history of music and the impact that the artists have on the music world today.  There is one classical musician per term, popular music and musical traditions with a spread of diversity, gender, world and UK musicians.

Impact

Throughout the child’s journey at Westwood their musical skills and understanding are built year on year, from singing nursery rhymes and action songs from memory and performing simple rhythm patterns on tuned and untuned percussion instruments in Early Years, progressing their skills and understanding in KS1 to further developing their skills and knowledge of the subject in KS2,  where the children access music confidently, and have the ability to read and follow a simple musical or graphical score. Throughout all of this the child’s enjoyment of music is a key element, running alongside the ‘taught’ musical skills and objectives. Our uptake of our Rock Choir is testament to the enjoyment of music across the school.
