Our hens have settled back into Westwood life after their very own 'Bird Flu' flock down.  After such a long time, it's been truly wonderful to see the children outside together once again and for Chicken Club to be able to recommence. 

Garden.

Many children find their time in the garden with the hens to be a relaxing and rewarding time, children form friendships and share tips with each other. We talk about the importance of good hygiene around animals. The children learn the importance of working together to help muck out and clean the coop.

Predator Protection. 

We demonstrate the importance of keeping our hens safe from predators. Children learn to identify possible signs of hazards.

Work and Play

The children gain confidence as they take on responsibility, with an understanding of the jobs that must be done in order to look after our hens, they are very keen to get the 'jobs' done before they settle to play with and relax in the company of each other and the hens. 

Vigilance 

Children quickly become familiar to the behaviours of the hens and can identify quickly when something is out of character, for example Rosie the hen is often broody. During this time she isn't very willing to come off of the nesting box.  Children in club take on the responsibility of making sure that Rosie is removed from the box and that she is taken to food and water, a broody hen will often forget to eat and drink.
