RE

In order to meet our statutory duty to teach Religious Education, at Westwood Primary School, we use the Suffolk RE Syllabus to underpin our teaching and learning of RE.

In Reception, we observe celebrations as they arise throughout the year, e.g. Diwali, Christmas, Chinese New Year and explore the beliefs and practices within each one. We also follow the children’s interests and link to their experiences, e.g. weddings in different cultures.

In Years 1 to 6, our children explore religions through Topics as well as stand alone lessons. They investigate the six main religions: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Islam, in particular the symbols and artefacts, inspirational people, prayer, worship and stories associated with each one.

As a school, we are culturally diverse and draw upon links with our families and wider community to enable our children to have meaningful and memorable experiences on which to pin their learning about religion and faith. We encourage our children to question, discuss and debate their opinions in order to make comparisons, identify differences and similarities and be accepting of those which are different to their own.
